THE JOURNEY

The road to Hāna is a gorgeous, winding coastal road with breathtaking valleys, lush rain forests and spectacular waterfalls. The tour begins with a stop at the quaint, old sugarmill town known as Paia.  With its wide variety of ethnic crafts, art, clothing, jewelry, and antique shops you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy.

Then you will head east, to the world famous Ho`okipa Beach Park.  This breath-taking white sand beach boasts perfect wind-surfing conditions and calls wind surfers from around the globe to challenge themselves in some of the world best wind and wave conditions.  Twin Falls is next on the journey and start the entry into the Hana-lush jungle.  Enjoy a short hike through bamboo to a beauitufl tropical waterfall. After the jouney refresh with a bit of sugar cane juice, a coconut, or a smoothie (for purchase at the roadside stand).  Back on the road you’ll pass through Haiku a small town full of lush vegetation:  guava, avos, papaya, palm, and kukui nut trees grow abundant in these hills.  Further down the road lies the historic Huelo known for its windswept vistas and remarkable cliff.  There are some exceptional ocean views from this vantage.

The next stop is Keanae, a town that seems frozen in the past.  Keanae is Located on a peninsula created by an old lava flow and many of the buildings are built with lava rock.  One of the most spectacular is the Keanae Congregational Church, built in 1860 with lava rock and coral mortar.  Enjoy local banana bread and enjoy the views from the peninsula that often include sightings of turtles.  Get an amazing photo above the Keanae at the lookout on the highway.  The enjoy town is viewed from above and is utterly picturesque.

Up the road a ways is Honokalani Beach also know as “black sands beach,” which is part of the Waianapanapa State Park.  This magnificent beach is set amid lava cliffs and the sand is actually small, smooth, lava pebbles worked smooth by years of tumbling in the ocean waves.  A small sea arch and sea caves are carved out of the lava by the shorelines providing yet another spectacular photo opportunity on this journey.  Take an ancient Hawaiian foot path through vibrant green jungle foliage to a clearing where you can view the cobalt blue ocean lapping at your feet.  This view is like a picture from a dream (and another opportunity to capture a memory on film).

Before you know we have arrived!  Hana Town!  One of the most quite, and simply beautiful places on the island.  Stop at the Hasegawa’s General Store (est. 1910) which is Hana’s oldest owned family business and a famous Hana landmark. Next stop, Hamoa Beach, a moon-shaped inlet beach set between two lava outflows.  This beach gets a bit of protection from the surrounding lava rock and provides a nice place to relax and enjoy the waves.

Koki Beach is also know as “red sands beach.” It has been created through thousands of years of erosion of an ancient cinder cone known as “Ka Iwi o Pele,” meaning the bone of Pele.  Koki Beach is spectacular in that it is the only red sand beach on the islands of Hawaii and it is home to thousands of seabirds that dwell among the 150-foot summit.

In Kipahulu you’ll visit O’heao Gulch is also known as the “The Seven Sacred Pools.”  The pools are a series of picturesque waterfalls and tranquil pools which flow amid O’heao Gulch to join the ocean.  The Pipiwai stream feeds these falls from town miles inland.  Also, in Kipahulu is Chales A. Linbergh’s grave.  The famed aviator lived his last days on the lush Hana coast and is buried on the grounds of the Palapala Ho’omau Church.

On the backside of the mountain you will tour Kaupo.  It’s rugged coastline, desert landscape, and nearly unpaved roads will give you a taste for adventure like few other tours on earth.  But don’t worry, you are in good and hands.  Just sit back and enjoy the thrilling views.

The last stop is a celebration fit to cap of the Hana adventure—a stop at Maui’s only winery—Tedeschi Vineyards.  Learn about different local wines and indulge in some o their unique flavors in the tasting room.  Enjoy spectacular bicoastal views of Maui’s coast while enjoying a chilled glass of wine and excellent sunset.
